OUR STORY
With over 15 years experience in the waste water industry, we have evolved with the new technologies that have now become common place and are now found on many sites in the water industry.
Having gained extensive knowledge on many sludge treatment processes on sewage treatment works across London and the surrounding counties including running and optimising thermal hydrolysis plants along with all associated equipment including steam raising plant and power generation equipment.
Our company is a member of the combustion engineering association and we have succeeded in becoming BOAS accredited for both boiler operators and boiler managers.
One of the most successful services we provide is the on site training of the thermal hydrolysis and steam boiler systems which is aimed at helping the client comply with current pressure regulations and to train staff to deal with the day to day running of these processes.
Our company has expanded to include the service of installation and maintenance of all equipment. We offer bespoke installations including the fabrication of pipework of all types, with provision to include pressure testing to ensure compliance with pressure system regulations.
We have built up a good relationship with many equipment suppliers so we are able to offer spares or new parts at competitive prices, this includes equipment from valves through to process instrumentation.
We take pride in our work and will go the extra mile to ensure our clients get the job they desire. All the same time as maintaining a good health and safety regime.
We have a good system in place to satisfy CDM regs for required documentation.

Meet the Team
Managing Director
Paul Johnson
Education: Chalfort Community College, trained as a Mechanical Engineer
Turning Point: While working at Corac Group, Paul realised his potential as an entrepreneur, leading him to found PBJ Engineering in May 2014.
As the Managing Director of PBJ Engineering, Paul's day-to-day tasks include speaking with clients, discussing projects, providing quotes, writing contracts, and covering for staff. His adaptable nature ensures that no two days are the same, keeping him engaged and energised.
Fun Fact: In his free time, Paul can be found on the golf course perfecting his swing.
Operations Specialist
Russell Holman
Previous work: Russell worked with Thames Water for more than two decades, spending 16 years in operations. He then worked in leadership roles, managing a diverse team for three years as an Area Performance Manager. Russell also spent 8 months as a Project Engineer, overseeing project delivery.
Role at PBJ: Russell will ensure wastewater treatment processes run safely and efficiently, focusing on sludge treatment and THP to maximise biogas production. His BOAS qualification in steam boiler operations is another example of his expertise.
Fun fact: Russell is very much following the Holman family tradition — his dad spent 42 working in the water industry!

Process Operator
Anthony Jenkins
Career Journey: Ant originally spent 13 years working on Anaerobic Digestion sites, helping to turn household food waste into renewable biogas.
Skills in Action: Since joining the PBJ team, Ant has got stuck in straight away as a Process Operator. He’s already achieved his BOAS certification in steam boiler operation, passing with flying colours.
Day-to-day, he’s involved in cleaning down client equipment, making sure machinery is running smoothly, and carrying out sampling and testing in the lab.
Fun Fact: When Ant’s not working, he’s usually travelling abroad or relaxing at a spa resort. He’s also known for keeping the team well-fed with his BBQ skills!
Process Operator
Ronnie Johnson
Education: Ronnie kicked off his professional journey at Farnborough College, where he studied Mechanical Engineering.
Skills in Action:
Once Ronnie had left college, he became a full-time process operator working alongside the big boss (his dad!)
Since Ronnie has joined us back in 2023, he’s gained plenty of hands-on experience across several areas.
Although he may not admit it, Ronnie has become a great trainer, who teaches any new team members the ropes to the job.
Fun Fact: When he's not immersed in the world of engineering, Ronnie can be found sharpening his gaming skills.

Process Operator/Technician
James Hoare
Background: James has lived in Hampshire all his life, starting out working in English woodlands and coming from a family with a farming background.
Career Journey: Things took a different turn when a friend introduced him to a role in the oil and gas industry. This eventually led him to a position in the control room at Portsmouth Water. The experience and skills he picked up along the way helped guide him to PBJ - once again through a friend.
“It’s not always what you know, it’s who you know! It’s great to be part of a family team.”
Fun Fact: James is a keen fisherman, which explains the impressive catch. Since turning 50, he says he has also been focusing on perfecting his napping skills.
Process Operator
Eric Scannell
Background: Originally from Ireland, Eric is well travelled and highly ambitious, with a strong drive to build his career in the renewable energy sector. After spending two years working at a biodiesel plant in Canada, he made the move to the UK to join PBJ and further his journey in the wastewater industry.
Education: With a background in Environmental Engineering and experience gained from a supervisory role in Canada, Eric quickly became a valued member of the team. He has since achieved his BOAS accreditation and continues to apply his knowledge in his role.
Fun Fact: Eric has visited 28 US states and plans to see them all. As he puts it, “The worst thing about travelling is you’ll never see enough.”

Process Operator
Aaron Hinks
Career Journey: After 25 years in Distribution Management, Aaron made the decision to leave the stresses of the role behind and transition into the wastewater treatment industry.
He began his journey in the raw sludge sector with Sludgetek, where he operated centrifuges and developed valuable technical skills. During this time, he gained hands-on experience in optimising equipment for efficiency, as well as stripping down and repairing centrifuges.
Skills in Action: Aaron later joined PBJ as a Centrifuge Process Operator before moving into the maintenance team, where he services client equipment.
In his current role, Aaron is responsible for operating on-site equipment, ensuring it runs efficiently, and carrying out maintenance to keep everything performing at its best.
Fun Fact: When Aaron isn’t busy with his many responsibilities, he can be found in the kitchen perfecting his cooking skills.
